About the Melodies

Beginner Bass is a collection of 50 short, fun, and accessible melodies in First Position for the beginner bassist. A range of keys, time signatures, and musical styles are included, alongside interesting bowing and rhythmic challenges, making these ideally suited as a study or sight-reading repertoire for the beginner bassist of any age.

Dynamics are at the discretion of the student and teacher, and bowings should be amended as needed. The main aim is accessibility and enjoyment, with the collection featuring pieces for different ability levels but remaining in First Position throughout.

The melodies do not need to be taught in any specific order, and the book could be taught alongside any method or book of etudes.

Some of the melodies can also be played an octave higher for bassists beginning to play in thumb position.

About David Heyes

David Heyes (b.1960) studied double bass with Laurence Gray and Bronwen Naish, later at the Royal College of Music in London, and completed his post-graduate studies in Prague with František Pošta (Principal Bass, Czech Philharmonic Orchestra). He has given recitals and masterclasses in 20 countries over the past few years and has been a juror at a number of international competitions, three times as chairman.

David's collaborative work gained him a prestigious award from the David Walter Charitable Trust of New York for his pioneering activities as a soloist, teacher, publisher, and commissioner of new music for double bass and he works with composers throughout the world to expand the double bass repertoire by commissioning new music and by rediscovering forgotten ones. Since 1983 more than 750 works have been written for him, music from one to twenty basses and from beginner to virtuoso, and he has premiered ten contemporary concertos with orchestra.

David began to compose in 2013 and has had music performed and recorded in 32 countries across five continents and is proud to be a D'Addario Performing Artist.

Very basic and comfortable.
Size: X-Large, Color: Light Heather Grey
This is the kind of shirt that I live/sleep in warm weather at home. Very basic and casual which is what I wanted. Definitely wouldn't call it "trendy" though. Great for working out, lounging in, cleaning in, even sleeping in. The fit is comfortable and loose but be mindful of your size selection. I always have to size up for most of my shirts because my upper arms are larger so some people might think this top is runs big. It does have a higher than usual amount of stretch compared to regular cotton t-shirts due to the higher percentage of spandex. Not much of a color choice available but the gray that I got looks like the pics. It's an ok value for the money but not what I'd call great and they definitely need more color choices.

Perfect Everyday Tank – Great Value and Fit
Size: X-Small, Color: Navy White Placed Stripe
This sleeveless muscle tank has quickly become a staple in my wardrobe. The material is soft, lightweight, and doesn’t wrinkle easily — perfect for everyday wear. I really like that the armholes aren’t too large, so there’s no bra showing. I got the navy and white striped one, and it’s not see-through at all. At under $10, it’s a fantastic value. I find myself reaching for it again and again. It works great on its own in summer or hot climates, and also pairs nicely with a cardigan or jacket. Looks great with denim shorts or jeans. I am 5’3” and 116 lbs. I ordered the XS and it fits great.

Soft Tank Top
Size: Small, Color: Bright White
Very soft material and comfortable and fits true to size, but the size is flowy/oversized or “relaxed” as they call it. If you want a tighter fit, size down. Perfect for layering.
